Christmas Cash Winners Announced

The Perry County Chamber of Commerce along with participating businesses are proud to announce this year’s Christmas Cash Giveaway. To win, shoppers must register at one of the participating merchants from through December 23 to win Chamber gift certificates. The promotion is intended to encourage local shopping over the holiday season and give local residents some extra shopping money compliments of local businesses. The total cash to be given away this year is over $1,200. There will be a winner from each participating location each week.

Winners for the week two were: Helen Gay, Sue Burst, Jamie Hoesli, Anna Harper, Mary Meunier, Mary Howard, Cora Haaff, Gerald James, Wilhemina Dye, Derek Seix, Jane Camron, and Curtis Vandgrift. Winners for the final week were: Debbie Tsantis, Jennifer Chestnut, Missy Aders, Tammy Devillez, Chuck Faust, William Kelsay, Donna Mullis, Mona Lehman, Elsie Flamion, Zack Maod and Becky Davis. Rebecca Madden won the $120 cash drawing.

Perry County History Book on Sale this Christmas

The Perry County Chamber of Commerce is happy to announce a sale on the Perry County: Then and Now book by Michael Rutherford. The book will be on sale through the end of the year for $50 – tax included! This book will make a great Christmas present for those hard-to-buy-for on your list!

The Perry County History Book is a standard library-size hardbound, 288 page book with a beautiful full color cover. The book was re-printed last year by request, so pick-up your copy today by calling the Chamber office or by visiting area retailers.

Retail Christmas Promotion to Begin

The Perry County Chamber of Commerce will begin the annual Retail Christmas Promotion on December 5th.

We invite you to join us for our “2011 CHRISTMAS CASH” retail promotion. Participating businesses will decorate a box to place in their store where shoppers can register with an entry blank for each $5 purchase in the store to win Christmas Cash. The cash will be in the form of Chamber gift certificates (to further encourage local shopping) worth over a thousand dollars to be given away as prizes from Thanksgiving through Christmas.

Participating businesses will be asked to draw a name from your box each Friday in December. We will call you for the name and pick grand prize winners each week from those given to us by participating stores. Each store will have a winner every week for a total of three winners from each store. The weekly winners will win $30 with a grand prize given the last week. The amounts may vary, depending on how many businesses participate. The Chamber will furnish you with registration forms and posters for your door/window and for your registration box soon after receiving your sign-up sheet.

The cost to participate is $100 for Chamber members and $150 for non-members.

Entrepreneurship Focus Groups to meet

Perry County is participating in the Indiana HomeTown Competitiveness program based on a successful application submitted by the Perry County Chamber of Commerce. The Indiana HomeTown Competitiveness program is operated out of the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs and helps rural communities successfully compete in the global economy.

Indiana HTC concentrates on five areas called pillars: Youth, Leadership, Entrepreneurship, Charitable Wealth and Rural Families Economic Success. Ferdinand has participated in the program since 2008, and we can all relate to the successes they have experienced with their economic boom just off the interstate.

We are now in phase one of the project. During this phase, each pillar is performing an assessment on how Perry County currently stands in each area listed above.

The Entrepreneurship Pillar is conducting focus groups for entrepreneurs in four areas of the county. We invite you to participate in one of the sessions listed. All sessions will take place from 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm.

- Troy - Tuesday, November 29 - St. Pius annex activities room

Perry County HTC Kick-off Celebration a Success!

The kickoff event to Perry County’s participation in an Indiana Hometown Competitiveness program was a success on Friday. The event offered entertainment, games, low-cost refreshments and a movie. Over 250 people attended the celebration.

The carnival-style program was held at the Perry County 4-H Fairgrounds and launched the first phase of the project, which will explore the county’s strengths, weaknesses and opportunities in the fields of youth, leadership, entrepreneurship, charitable wealth and rural families’ economic success.

Indiana Home Town Competitiveness was started after lawmakers saw Nebraska’s success with a similar program. The rural plain state began an HTC program to stop the drain of population and resources of rural areas to larger cities and other states.

Tony Hollinden and Larry Peter performed, as did Twila Brown - 2011 Shoot for the Stars winner. Games included a dime toss, duck and fish ponds, dart throw and a “dunk-the-sheriff” booth with Sheriff Lee Chestnut.

The membership of the Perry County Chamber of Commerce will be voting in Board Members at the annual picnic on Thursday, September 15th.

The list of nominations for the Chamber Board of Directors is as follows:

The Perry County Chamber of Commerce annual membership picnic is scheduled for Thursday, September 15th at Mulzer Camp on Highway 66, west of Troy. The social hour begins at 5:30 pm and dinner of grilled steak will be at 6:30 pm. Board elections begin at 7:30 pm.

Reynards Ribbon Cutting

The Perry County Chamber of Commerce will conduct a ribbon cutting for Reynards Restaurant on Friday, June 3rd at 1:00 pm. The ribbon cutting will be held to celebrate their new business.

Reynards Restaurant opened on March 29th this year at 510 Main Street in Tell City (the previous Vivien’s location). Reynards is open Tuesday through Thursday 10:30 am-8:00 pm, Friday and Saturday from 7:00 am-9:00 pm and Sunday 7:00 am-1:00 pm. Their menu has selections to suit any taste including: paninis, hoagies, wraps, salads, soups, appetizers, nachos, burgers, pastas, stroms, pizza, entrees, and desserts.

Perry County has been selected as one out of five communities to participate in the Indiana HomeTown Competitiveness program! The Chamber of Commerce completed the successful application earlier this year and held a panel review of community leaders for the IHTC resource team to make this happen.

This program has the potential to lead Perry County to be more successful globally by working on committees or "pillars" for entrepreneurship, leadership, youth, community wealth and rural families. This program has proven in communities like Ferdinand, that if you are successful in these areas, the community is successful.

The Chamber stated in the application that Perry County is ready to "burst at the seams with potential" and "we have residents that are eager to both see our community succeed and to assist with that success". This program will give Perry County the structure to maximize on our potential and to support us to be successful in this new global society.

While no monetary gain comes with this successful application, Perry County gains $170,000 in services from the Indiana Resource Team which consists of Ball State University's "Building Better Communities", Indiana Grantmakers Alliance, Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs, Indiana Rural Development Council, Purdue University's Center for Regional Development/Extension Service, USDA-Rural Development, University of Southern Indiana Extended Services and Indiana Association of Community Economic Development.

Goody's Ribbon Cutting

The Perry County Chamber of Commerce will conduct a ribbon cutting for the Goody’s on Wednesday, May 18th at 8:45 am. The ribbon cutting will be held to celebrate the changeover from Peebles to Goody’s.

The Goody’s store is located in the Lincoln Park Plaza shopping center at 19 US Highway 66 in Tell City. The Goody’s and Peebles are owned by Stage Stores.

Loyal Peebles shoppers need not worry though, because Goody’s will carry an expanded assortment of the quality, brand name apparel and accessories Peebles customers know and love, plus a great selection of juniors and men’s apparel that made Goody’s a destination for the latest looks.

Customers who are eager to get a first glimpse of the new Goody’s store can attend the 8:45 a.m. ribbon cutting, with doors swinging wide open to welcome all shoppers at 9 a.m. Shopper reward programs such as a membership discount for customers 50 and over, military discount and VIP Rewards membership will also be available at the new Goody’s.

Spring Chamber Job Fair Planned

The Perry County Chamber of Commerce is hosting a Job Fair with area businesses on Wednesday, May 25th. The job fair will be held at the Schergens Center from 1-6:00 pm.

All interested businesses are invited to setup booths promoting employment in their company. Booth rental for Chamber members is $100 for large employers and $50 for small employers; non-members is $200 for large employers and $100 for small employers. The job fair is free to educational institutions, workforce development agencies, and local government.

Setup is available the morning of May 25th starting at 10:00 am at the Schergens Center. One covered 8’ table, 2 chairs, company identification sign (with the logo if provided by the employer) and an on-site candidate interview area will be provided for each booth.

Provide an item for the golfer’s goody bag with your business name on it!
We’ll provide a tournament “goody bag” filled with lots of items for use by the golfers, which are donated by local businesses. Here are some ideas of items we could use: (we’ll need 40 of each): Golf towels, tees, golf bag tags, balls, divot repair tool, golf marking pens, ball markers, golf pencils, pens, hats, visors, sunglasses, soft drink holders/coolers/lids, water bottles, shirts, umbrellas, waist packs, windbreakers, headbands/wristbands, key chains, calculators, pre-paid phone cards, mini measuring tapes, you get the idea!

Provide a Gift for use as a door prize or raffle item:
If you don’t have something that will go in the golfer’s tote, we need lots of prizes to give away as door prizes. Anything that represents your business is appreciated. Any larger donations may be raffled off or used at hole contests (with your business listed on on-course signage) and all others given as door prizes to golfers. Any gift will be greatly appreciated from restaurant certificate, movie passes, lawn or garden products, etc.

All donors will be listed in the player’s programs and on news releases about the tournament.

JC Penney Catalog Store Ribbon Cutting Set

The Perry County Chamber of Commerce will conduct a ribbon cutting for the JC Penney Catalog Store on Monday, May 16th at 10:00 am. The ribbon cutting will be held to celebrate the purchase and relocation of the store. The open house will take place from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm the same day.

The JC Penney Catalog store is moving to the Dauby Hardware location. The owner is Debbie Ramsey.

Gerlach and Gayer Ribbon Cutting

The Perry County Chamber of Commerce conducted a ribbon cutting for Gerlach and Gayer Custom Collision Center on Friday, April 8th at noon to celebrate their new business. The open house will take place from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm the following day, Saturday, April 9th.

Eli Gerlach and Clint Gayer are the owners of Gerlach and Gayer Custom Collision Center which is located at 1133 Main Street, in Tell City (former Kenny & Steve’s). Gerlach and Gayer Collision Center offers auto body repair, restorations, detailing, window tinting, stereo and sub installs and spray-in bed liners. Their hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 am – 5:30 pm.

Domestic Goddess Ribbon Cutting

The Perry County Chamber of Commerce conducted a ribbon cutting for Domestic Goddess Salon and Boutique, LLC on Friday, March 11th at noon to celebrate the grand opening of their store in Tell City. Domestic Goddess is located at 745 Main Street in Tell City. They will host an open house from 9:00 am-5:30 pm the same day.

Domestic Goddess Boutique has new inventory available in jewelry, lotions, purses, candles, home décor, food items, coffees and totes. Domestic Goddess Salon has three stylists in their full service hair salon, manicurist, pedicurist and a massage therapist available. Domestic Goddess Salon and Boutique is owned by Teresa Lutgring and Diann Williams. The salon is open by appointment and the boutique is open Monday – Friday 9-5:30 and Saturday 9-3:00.

Cromwell Radio Group Ribbon Cutting

The Perry County Chamber of Commerce conducted a ribbon cutting for Cromwell Radio Group – WTCJ-FM on Tuesday, February 15th at 9:00 am to celebrate the re-opening of their “hometown radio” studio in Tell City. Cromwell Radio Group – WTCJ-FM is once again located at 645 Main Street in Tell City, above German American Bank and will host an open house from 8-10:00 am the same day.

WTCJ-FM/105.7 will air “Mornings with Mike Chaney” each morning – including during the open house. The program will have a hometown emphasis with local advertising and public service announcements. Listen in to the 24 hour broadcasting or by appointment for a personal visit.

Petals Floral Shop Ribbon Cutting

The Perry County Chamber of Commerce conducted a ribbon cutting for Petals Floral Shop on Tuesday, February 8th at 11:30 am to celebrate their new business location. Petals Floral Shop is now located at 425 Main Street in Tell City, the former Flower Basket building.

David Carney is the owner of Petals Floral Shop and VIP Foliage (Petals former location), with Becky Paulin, Linda Eger and Martha Schaeffer working at the new location. Petals carries fresh and silk flowers, balloons, wind chimes, afghans and plants. Petals also has rentals for weddings and banquets such as tuxes, table linens, chair back coverings, glassware, arches and pedestals. Petals is open Monday-Friday 8:00 am-5:00 pm, Saturday 9:00 am-12:00 pm, and Sundays for calls only.

Electric Sun Ribbon Cutting

The Perry County Chamber of Commerce will conducted a ribbon cutting for Electric Sun on Friday, November 12th at 11:30 am to celebrate their new business. The open house will took place from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm.

Ryan and Paige Werner are the owners of Electric Sun which is located at 114 E. Hwy 66, in Tell City (near the movie theater). Electric Sun has tanning beds, a spray tanning booth, and tanning lotions and products. Hours are Monday through Friday 9:00 am – 8:00 pm, Saturday 9:00 am – 7:00 pm and Sunday noon-7:00 pm. Paige Werner serves as Store Manager.

The Perry County Chamber of Commerce conducted a ribbon cutting for Lincoln Hills Development Corporation Early Head Start on Thursday, October 28th at 12:15 pm to celebrate their new business. The open house took place from 11:00 am to 1:30 pm.

Tell City Troy Township School board candidates are invited to an Oct. 24 event at Tell City High School. The forum is sponsored by the Perry County Chamber of Commerce and The Perry County News.

The School Board forum begins at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 24, will be held in the auditorium at Tell City Junior-Senior High School and will allow candidates for Tell City-Troy Township to share their reasons for wanting to join the school board and goals they have.

The school-candidates’ event will follow a 2 to 4 p.m. open house at the high school.

Candidates in county and school-board races are being mailed letters explaining details of the events.

TELL CITY – An Oct. 13 forum will give Perry County voters preparing to go to the polls a chance to hear the views of candidates seeking county offices. The forum is sponsored by the Perry County Chamber of Commerce and The Perry County News. The Oct. 13 event will be held at the Schergens Center and begins at 6 p.m.

Candidates in contested races for prosecutor, commissioner, county council, coroner and county clerk will talk about their reasons for seeking elected office. They’ll also answer questions. Unopposed candidates will be given time to introduce themselves and their reasons for seeking election or re-election.

“After a spirited May primary election, Perry County voters are again taking an interest in locally contested races. The forum is one of the best ways to hear from candidates’ own mouth why they’re running and what they’d like to do if elected,” News Editor Vince Luecke said. “The forum will also help News staff prepare for its profiling of candidates in the issues before the election.”

The Oct. 13 candidates forum will be on WTCJ 105.7 FM and will be streamed online at www.tellcityradio.com.

The Perry County Chamber of Commerce is hosting a Job Fair with area businesses on Tuesday, May 18th. The job fair will be held at the Schergens Center from 1-6:00 pm.

All interested businesses are invited to setup booths promoting employment in their company. Booth rental for Chamber members is $100 for large employers and $25 for small employers; non-members is $200 for large employers and $50 for small employers. The job fair is free to educational institutions, workforce development agencies, and local government.

Setup is available the morning of May 18th starting at 10:00 am at the Schergens Center. One 8’ table, 2 chairs, company identification sign (with the logo if provided by the employer) and an on-site candidate interview area will be provided for each booth.

The Chamber handed out awards for four categories during the evening - Large Business (greater than 25 employees), Small Business (up to 25 employees), Entrepreneur, and Applause (non-profit or individual). The award winners are chosen by last year's winners.

Ferdinand's Hometown Competitiveness Success May Be Guide for Perry County

TELL CITY - One nearby town's success could provide a recipe for improving the quality of life for Perry County's residents and helping the community compete for residents and community development.

The board of directors for the Perry County Chamber of Commerce is exploring the opportunities available through an Indiana Hometown Competitiveness Program and held an informational meeting last Thursday at the Schergens Center.

Marc Steczyk, town manager for Ferdinand, was the guest speaker. He shared his community's participation in the state program, which has at its foundation four pillars - entrepreneurship, wealth transfer, youth and leadership. He said Ferdinand's success in shaping its vision of itself, charting future growth and involving its young people could work in Perry County.

"The state provides the framework but communities shape how the program will work for them," said Steczyk.

Steczyk said Ferdinand has used the program to assess where it stands as a community in several areas, among them how to begin growing its population, attracting visitors and involving its youth in everyday life. As it developed its strategy, Steczyk said local leaders developed projects such as a Profiles in Success lecture series in which former grads meet with students and adults in the community. Also developed was a Forest Park High School Alumni Association and a new townwide recreation program that attracted more than 400 kids for activities this summer. A community movie night also drew hundreds of people.

Other programs are catered to entrepreneurs and developers who might be interested in the community.

Ferdinand's Hometown Competitiveness efforts also identified areas of future residential growth, a program whose success challenged conventional wisdom that the town was landlocked and had few if any areas for constructing new homes.

By meeting with landowners whose properties abutted town limits and finding which of those owners would be interesting in discussing a possible sale of some land for new subdivisions, the town can now showcase areas of future growth with developers.

Cheri Taylor, the county chamber of commerce's executive director who updated county officials on the opportunity to apply for the program, said she and other chamber leaders will use positive input from Steczyk and others to consider an application to the state, likely in the spring.

Chamber leaders see the program as a way to promote community development. Private donations would cover the approximately $7,500 in costs.

"The Indiana Hometown Competitiveness Program was developed to help communities such as ours reverse the population decline and 'brain drain' that has been experienced," said Missy Noble, chamber president, in an Aug. 20 letter to members and elected officials. "The state believes that Indiana rural communities can use this program to accomplish their economic- and community-development goals."

If the chamber moves forward, an application would likely be made in the spring, with a steering committee working to develop a plan. Steczyk said Ferdinand has communicated with residents through a town Web site and columns in the Ferdinand News.

Chamber Eyes Ingredients for Thriving Community

TELL CITY - The board of directors for the Perry County Chamber of Commerce is exploring the opportunities available through an Indiana Home Town Competitiveness Program, chamber Executive Director Cheri Taylor said Aug. 20.

Addressing county-council members as they heard representatives of various county offices explain budget needs for next year, Taylor said the program, which is administered by the state's Office of Community and Rural Affairs, will be explained at a meeting scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 3 at the Schergens Center in Tell City.

The program "looks at four ... pillars - entrepreneurship, wealth transfer, youth and leadership - and it helps you build on those four," Taylor said. Pilot studies have shown that if those pillars are strong in a community, she added, "then you have a thriving community."

"The Indiana Hometown Competitiveness Program was developed to help communities such as ours reverse the population decline and 'brain drain' that has been experienced," said Missy Noble, chamber president, in an Aug. 20 letter to members and elected officials. "The state believes that Indiana rural communities can use this program to accomplish their economic- and community-development goals."

The chamber will look into using the program in what Taylor called an effort very similar "to the visioning process we did back in (20)04 and finished up in '05." New faces in the community and the chamber office "have popped up, so we really need to put some initiatives in front of people to start working on that (help prepare Perry County) for the next century. So we're going to at least look at this, to see what interest is out there."

"This isn't going to cost the chamber or the council any money," Taylor continued, "it's all going to be done through private donations." Those will total a required $7,500, she added, "and then the state does the rest." Taylor told the council members she just wanted to make them aware the chamber is looking into the opportunity.

In addition to the state's rural-affairs office, other organizations contributing to the program include Ball State and Purdue universities, the University of Southern Indiana, Indiana Grantmakers Alliance, Indiana Rural Development Council and United States Department of Agriculture.

"All of these partners have seen the proven record of this program helping smaller and more-rural communities build significantly stronger and more sustainable development," Noble said in the letter. "Each partner has committed various resources to help communities initiate, implement and sustain the activities associated with the four-pillar process."

The Perry County Chamber of Commerce's Annual Membership Picnic, the best-attended business networking event of the year, has been scheduled for Thursday, August 27 at Mulzer Camp west of Troy. The event is held annually to elect new board members for the upcoming year.

The slate of officers for the Annual Meeting are: Missy Noble, David Lynch, Jennifer Tuggle all for reappointment and Donna Harpenau to replace outgoing Board member Michael Elaman.

The picnic will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a social hour and dress is casual. Chamber Business Golf Classic

TELL CITY - Annual business honors handed out Thursday recognized three Tell City businesses: a longtime grocery store, women's clothier and Main Street gift shop.

Also honored among local nonprofit organizations was United Way of Perry County.

The eighth annual business-awards ceremony sponsored by the Perry County Chamber of Commerce was held at the Schergens Center. Large Business of the Year honors went to Noble's IGA, with Celebrations owner Larky Flanagan named Entrepreneur of the Year. Maurices received the award for Small Business of the Year.

Noble's IGA was recognized for its presence in the community since 1956, one of the first local supermarkets.

"And it's still a store where someone will bag your groceries and carry them to the car," chamber Vice President Colleen Smith said in presenting the award.

She also credited the store for allowing nonprofit groups and churches to raise money by collecting store receipts.

Celebrations is a party and gift store in the 600 block of Main Street that offers name-brand items to local shoppers, said Smith, who credited owner Larky Flanagan for turning a once-vacant building into a "bright, friendly place to shop."

Clothing retailer Maurices was recognized for its offerings of fashionable, affordable clothing. Store manager Lynn Fulkerson, who accepted the award with first assistant Jamie Fulkerson, used the opportunity to quiet rumors the store would soon close.

"We're a strong company and we are not closing, but we will move locations," Lynn Fulkerson said. The store will move later this year from Plaza East to the Tell City Shopping Center across from Wal-Mart.

Other Nominations

Other businesses nominated for awards were McDonald's in the large-business category and Advanced Rehabilitation and Cromwell Radio Group in the category for small business. Additional entrepreneurship nominations went to Catholic Charities, Glenn Wood Hills Camp and Retreat and Leadership Perry County.

This year's Applause Award, given to a nonprofit organization, went to United Way of Perry County. The organization not only serves as a steward for community gifts that support community organizations, Chamber Executive Director Cheri Taylor said in presenting the honor, but spearheads projects that provide gifts and clothing to youngsters around the holidays.

Taylor said United Way's Stuff the Bus project invites the public to donate school supplies to students in several school districts and a coalition of food pantries it has helped to organize promotes those groups' work among those in need.

Evening's Speakers

Speaking during the evening was Tell City Councilman Tony Hollinden, who updated attendees on a Tell City-Perry County health initiative. A gathering March 12 at Tell City High School kicks off the program, which will continue through August. A $3 fee gets participants a T-shirt. More than 125 people have already signed up, Hollinden said.

Perry County Commissioner Gary Dauby also spoke, sharing a slideshow of early Indiana maps. Dauby pointed out that the farm Abraham Lincoln moved to in 1816 was in an area that was then part of Perry County. Spencer County wasn't formed until 1818.

Dauby also commended the work of County Highway Superintendent Ed Feix and Emergency Management Agency Director Steve Hauser, both of whom led recovery efforts after storms in September, January and February.
